Where does authority come from? Does it come from some higher power or does it come from people who are willing to listen? Once we get authority, how do we decide what to do with it? It’s an interesting thought and one that I’ve been thinking about for a little while now. Why? I’ll explain.
I got to thinking about this as a result of this week’s class. We were chatting about authority; how we get it and why it’s important. One of the biggest things that I took away from it was the fact that you could basically make yourself an authority on anything as long as you had the audience for it and you provided a unique and creative perspective. If you do that, people will listen to you and by having people listening to you, you are given authority.
It got me thinking: Am I an authority on songwriting and music? Well, amongst my friends I am one of the biggest music nerds I know. I mean I do spend my free time reading books on the music publishing business and copyright law. Now in the eyes of the overall songwriting world, I’m still just a baby. I mean, yeah I’ve written some good songs but many of them haven’t even left my head. Yet here I am writing a blog that talks about songwriting, the music industry, and the creative process. What about me and my content says that YOU (the reader) want to keep coming back?
But what I do know is that I have a unique perspective to offer. There is no one in the world who can think the way that I do and can see things the way I do. Yes, there are those who have similar thoughts but that does not mean they are the same as I. No, I’m not the foremost authority on major aspects of the music industry. I still have a lot of growing and learning to do. But what I do know is that I am an authority on all things Grace Rose. That cannot change and there is no one else who is. I write this blog not necessarily so I can be this huge blogger but I write because I believe that I have a unique perspective to offer and I would hope that there are others out there who would choose to read my thoughts and learn from my perspective. So if that’s you, introduce yourself in the comments! I’d love to get to know you and learn more about your perspective! Perhaps you have authority that I’m wanting to connect with.
